Installing SQL on dedicated hardware is the best approach to ensure system performance. This setup allows the SQL server to utilize all available system resources without contention from other applications or services that could run on shared hardware. Dedicated hardware means that CPU, memory, storage I/O, and network bandwidth are all allocated solely to the SQL server, optimizing performance and reducing latency.

In a dedicated environment, system administrators can also better manage and configure hardware resources specifically for the SQL workload, leading to improved response times and efficiency in processing SQL queries and transactions. Furthermore, dedicated hardware often facilitates easier scaling, as performance can be enhanced through hardware upgrades without the complications that arise when multiple workloads are involved.

In contrast, shared servers can lead to resource contention, where multiple applications vie for limited system resources, ultimately degrading the performance of the SQL server. Limiting access to fewer devices may provide some performance enhancements, but it does not address the underlying issues related to resource allocation and contention that can occur in a shared environment. Using an outdated SQL version can lead to stability and performance problems, as newer versions typically come with optimizations, support, and improved features beneficial for maintaining high performance.
